Yorath: It was embarrassing!
Wednesday 19th August 2009
MARGATE boss Terry Yorath slammed his side’s performance during their shocking 4-0 home defeat to Kent rivals Dartford last night, writes Stephen McCartney.
Whilst the Darts are sitting proudly at the top of the Ryman Premier League table with maximum points from their opening two league games, Margate, who were reprieved from relegation having finished fourth-from-bottom last season, remain rooted to the foot of the table.
Having lost 4-0 to Sutton United at Gander Green Lane at the weekend, Yorath, who was speaking in an audio interview with www.margate-fc.co.uk, slammed his side for their shocking defending as Tony Burman’s Darts ran riot at Hartsdown Park.
Goals from Jamie Day, former Margate forward, Rob Haworth, Lee Burns and Allan Tait did the damage, leaving the Welshman furious.
“Well, I said I was embarrassed by Saturday’s performance,” he fumed. “I don’t know, it was even worse than that I think!
“They scored after about five minutes with a free-kick and we didn’t win any headers at all.
“We were lucky to go in 1-0 down.
“Second half we improved for about twenty minutes but the defending was shocking! Balls (were played) into our area, our centre halves not able to head them out. We paid for it!”
Yorath and his number two, Neville Southall, have a job on their hands to lift their side ahead of their next game.
“Pretty easy to say now, there’s a lot of hard work to be done. Players, you could see them before the game tonight, their confidence has been shot to bits,” admitted Yorath.
“We’ve got to lift them up and get on with it. We’ve got another home game on Saturday, we’ve got to see if we can do any better.”
Yorath, who played three central defenders, has promised changes ahead of that game, against Boreham Wood.
He said: “I don’t know if we have to change the system or not. Have more players across the middle of the park?
“I’ve got to sleep on that one and see if I’ve got the players because looking at my bench tonight, there was nobody on the bench that could go onto the pitch and change it for me.”
Yorath, who handed much-travelled left-back Narada Bernard his debut last night, making Margate his SIXTEENTH club in ten years, says he is still looking out for new players to turn around their fortunes.
“I might have to look at other areas,” he said. “The way we defended today was shocking. I might be looking at defenders.”
He added: “I expect to have a striker on loan by then and I expect to have another striker as well and possibly a centre half.”
