Yorath and Southall will lead us to success next season, insists Piper

Tuesday 21st April 2009

MARGATE director Keith Piper says the club will be keeping faith with Terry Yorath and Neville Southall next season.

The Welsh legends face a make-or-break must-win last-day showdown at runners-up Staines Town on Saturday, and the Thanet club must better Boreham Wood’s result (at home to Dartford) to maintain their Ryman Premier League status.

The biggest cheer of the club’s presentation night held at Hartsdown Park last weekend came when Mr Piper confirmed that Yorath and Southall will continue in their current roles next season.

"We knew it was going to be difficult (this season)," Mr Piper said in an audio interview with www.margate-fc.com.

"I’m very pleased with what I’m seeing on the field; I think we’re starting to play football again."

However, with the prospect of the club suffering relegation along with their Thanet rivals Ramsgate, who have finished bottom, Mr Piper insists the club will bounce back.

"If we have to take another relegation, that’s something we’ve got to deal with," he said.

"But I think we’ve got the basis now of moving the club forward and I think that’s always what we set out to achieve when we announced last season that we were restructuring the foundations (of the club).

"The desire to encourage continuity throughout the club has started to bare fruit with a number of players having graduated during the season to the first team.

"In addition, the first team management team have been active in encouraging the other teams within the club to play in a way that helps makes the transition to the first team more effective.

"I think wherever we start off next season (in the Ryman Premier or Ryman One South), we will start off with a basis of a team that gives us the opportunity to start that forward move to get back to the Blue Square Premier, which is our objective."
