Wings' net young free-kick specialist

Friday 21st July 2006
Welling United have signed striker Akwasi Edusei on a one-year deal - with an option to stay at Park View Road for longer.

A statement issued on www.wellingunited.com said: “Edusei, 19, is a young striker who was previously with Gillingham, where he spent many years in their youth team, pairing up with fellow Wings defender Leon Solomon, who still to this day are good friends.

“Edusei’s most notable achievement would be netting the winning goal in the FA Youth Cup fourth round clash between the Gills and Liverpool at Anfield.  He has a knack for scoring his well-rehearsed free-kicks.

“Akwasi (pictured) rejoined the Gills for a second chance to prove himself after initially being released in the summer of 2005.

”Since his arrival back at Priestfield, his performances at youth level had earned him an opportunity of first team football. However, Edusei made six first team appearances for the Gills in the 2005/2006. He was released in May 2006 along with nine other final-year scholars.

”Wings Boss Adrian Pennock has been chasing the striker for a long time and is extremely happy with the signing.”

The striker is likely to make his Wings debut tomorrow when Nationwide Conference side Grays Athletic visit Park View Road.

Meanwhile, two midfielders signed new deals with the Nationwide Conference South outfit earlier in the week.

Matt Bodkin played over 30 games for the Wings last season and was on trial with Gillingham but was not offered a contract with the League One club and subsequently rejoined Welling United.

Steve Perkins, who scored five goals for the club last season, will be a vital asset for boss Adrian Pennock this season.
