Whitstable Town scoop Barry East Trophy for flying the Ryman League flag in FA Trophy run
The award celebrates an outstanding club achievement and or personal contribution within the Isthmian Football League.
Previous winners have included now Football League clubs Dagenham & Redbridge and Wycombe Wanderers, along with Ryman chief Theo Paphitis in season 2009-10 and last years’ winners were Hastings United, who reached the FA Cup Third Round where they lost to Middlesbrough.
The most celebrated award was presented to Whitstable Town for the incredible feat of being the lowest ranked club whom won through to the last 32 of The FA Trophy, only to be knocked out by Conference South side Ebbsfleet United and in the process generated much positive publicity for both themselves, their sponsors and the Ryman League for whom Nicky Southall’s side were the last Ryman League team left in the competition.
Whitstable Town chairman and League director Gary Johnson was overjoyed to collect the award in front of so many honoured guests and peers and whilst this crowned a disappointing league season it did recognise the efforts of all connected to the club.
“It was amazing that we were recognised in such a public way,” said Mr Johnson.
“I was shocked but very, very pleased of course to receive the award on behalf of all associated with the club.
“Last season’s FA Trophy success and subsequent publicity relaly lifted the spirits in the camp in what was an otherwise difficult season.
“It’s a great reflection on last terms players, staff and of course the voulunteers for whom the travelling support is the envy of the majority of clubs and for whom we also receive such acclaim.
“This success and subsequent profile helps retains major sponsors and I hope help attract new sponsors too.”
