Whitstable's numbers come on on a night when everything clicked
WHITSTABLE TOWN won the lottery tonight, as their convincing 4-1 win ended Ashford Town’s impressive fifteen game unbeaten run, writes Stephen McCartney.
Marc Seager’s side romped to a stunning victory at the KRBS Belmont, courtesy of an Ian Pulman hat-trick and another from Danny Tipple to secure their fifth win in their last seven games.
Seager, speaking to www.whitstabletownfc.co.uk before and after the game, insisted tonight’s game - and Saturday’s home game with another high-flying side Metropolitan Police - were for “bonus points”, as their recent wins had came against the Ryman League Division One South’s lesser lights in their own “mini-league.”
But Seager was proud of his side’s performance against their much-fancied Kent rivals.
“We started brightly and to be honest apart from a couple of spells, I never thought the result was in any doubt,” he said.
“We played well all over the pitch from the front to the back. We played the ball out wide and gave the front two plenty of ball to open them up.
“If I’m honest we were very poor when they beat us four nil (earlier in the season), but today was so very different and we beat a very good Ashford side, who have been on a fantastic run of form. I am delighted for all concerned within the club.”
Coach Simon Halsey was pleased that the Oystermen performed in front of the club’s largest crowd of the season.
“We always knew that we had enough in our locker,” he said. “We have the quality at the club and kept faith with the players.
“It was just a matter of time before the team clicked in every position; we did it again tonight.
“For anyone who was not at Burgess Hill, a game when we won 5-0, that’s just how we played, but on a very heavy pitch.”
Ashford Town’s goalscorer was the versatile Craig Wilkins, but for Whitstable’s hat-trick hero Pulman his attention now turns to beating the Police on Saturday.
“I’m delighted to score three goals, but just as important it’s another three points and we look forward to the Met Police,” he added.
