We won't give up the ghost, says Warrilow

Thursday 04th December 2008

TONBRIDGE ANGELS boss Tommy Warrilow has not ruled out his side’s chances of clinching promotion at the end of the season, writes Stephen McCartney.

Shell-shocked Angels were defeated 3-0 at Dover Athletic last weekend, having leaked all three goals in the first thirteen minutes of the second half at Perrys Crabble.

And Warrilow, speaking to www.kentishfootball.co.uk following that game, knows his side must pick up maximum points from their home game against Wealdstone on Saturday as they’re now 13 points behind Andy Hessenthaler’s side.

“Whoever’s at the top we’ll try and keep as closest tabs as we can,” he said.

“There’s still loads of games to play and we’ve got to keep our heads down and try and get on a run ourselves.

“It’s important that we bounce back and get three points.”

The fifth placed Angels currently occupy the last play-off berth with 32 points from 19 games and they welcome a Wealdstone side that are presently in tenth place in the Ryman Premier League table with seven less points.

The Stones have lost their last two league games, having won their previous five and the two sides played out a goal-less draw on the opening day of the season.

“We’re sitting in and amongst them,” said Warrilow, who added: “Looking at the way the season started we were coughing and spluttering our way through.

“I’m quietly happy where we are. I’d like to be a bit higher but as long as we maintain and stay in the play-off spots, if we finish the season in the play-off sport, it’s been a progression on last year and that’s what we’re looking to do.

“Until it’s mathematically impossible you never give up the ghost. People can laugh it off whatever, if there’s an outside chance we’ll keep going.”

Warrilow, whose side won their first cup match of the season in midweek, with a 5-2 win at Merstham to book their place in the third round of the Ryman League Cup, expects Dover Athletic will be a tough nut to crack.

He said: “Dover have a very good set-up with what they’ve got resources wise - the proof is in the pudding - it’s going to be difficult for people to knock them off their perch.”

Meanwhile, former Tonbridge Angels goalkeeper, Jamie Turner, who has kept seven clean sheets in 15 games, has been put on the transfer list by Blue Square South outfit Welling United.

Turner lost the number one jersey at Park View Road as boss Andy Ford has drafted in Clark Masters on a loan from Southend United for the rest of the season.
