We will turn the corner, vows Dack

WELLING UNITED assistant manager Jimmy Jack will try and pick up the pieces following last night’s disastrous FA Cup exit at Whyteleafe, writes Stephen McCartney.

The Wings joined fellow Blue Square South sides Bromley, Braintree Town, Bognor Regis Town, Chelmsford City, Fisher Athletic, St Albans City and Thurrock to be dumped out of the competition - at the first hurdle - by Ryman League sides - in the second qualifying round.

Goals, against the run of play, in the last 23 minutes from defender Asher Hudson and substitute Sean Rivers, ensured Whyteleafe, playing their sixth FA Cup tie this season, stretched their unbeaten run to seven games, to humble a Wings side that have now gone eight games without a win.

Dack could be heard shouting obscenities at the players following their shocking performance, and striker Charlie Sheringham squandered three golden opportunities early in the second half but they weren’t taken.

The Ryman League Division One South hosts earned the right to travel to another Blue Square South side in Hampton & Richmond Borough in the penultimate qualifying round on Saturday week.

Dack, speaking to www.kentishfootball.co.uk after locking the players inside the dressing room for about 30 minutes, insists the team will bounce back at Bishop’s Stortford on Saturday.

“Look, we haven’t done too well for the last six or seven games but we’re sitting ninth in the league,” he said.

“We go and win Saturday we’re not a million miles away of the play-off’s. Yes, it’s negative that we haven’t done so well for the last six or seven games but look at it in a positive.

“If we go and win a game we’re not far from the play-off’s.”

The Wings travel to Hertfordshire sitting five points off Maidenhead United in the play-off zone and Dack knows what the players need to do to turn the corner.

He said: “We’ll keep working hard, keep working hard. That’s all you can do. Hopefully you’ll get the rub of the green and one or two (goals) go in and one or two wins and all off a sudden it looks a different ball game.”
