We've got to build on our cup success, says Ford

WELLING UNITED manager Andy Ford says winning the Kent Senior Cup was not on his list of priorities this season, writes Stephen McCartney.

The Wings lifted the silverware for the third time in their history last night, comfortably beating Whitstable Town 6-1 at a wet Park View Road.

The Wings have three leagues games of a disappointing season remaining, starting with tomorrow’s trip to Weston-super-Mare, and Ford, speaking to www.kentishfootball.co.uk last night, wants to end their campaign on a high note.

"With all due respect to the Kent Cup, it’s not at the top of my list every season," he said.

"We wanted to be in the play-off’s and have a good run in the FA Cup, but it’s a nice way to end the season."

The Wings are presently in eighth place in the Blue Square South table, 12 points adrift of the play-off zone, and Ford insists he wants improvement next term.

"The hardest part now is to try and keep the majority of our squad together and to build on it next year," he said.

"I think it should move forward but with the credit crunch and budget cuts and things like that it may prove to be difficult because that’s what our aim is.

"You can’t start a season with fresh players and expect them to go through (to the play-off’s).

"To finish in the top ten and done what I’ve done, I would’ve liked to have done better, but I think that’s being a bit greedy to be honest.

"I think everyone should be satisfied with the season really."

Ford knows exactly what he wants for their games against Weston-Super-Mare, at Team Bath next Tuesday and at home to Newport County on the last day of the season.

"Nine points, that’s our target!" he said. "We’ve got to finish the season on a high."
