We truly believe we can finish in a strong position, says Eltham Palace's Charlie McCarthy

ELTHAM PALACE joint-manager Charlie McCarthy says he is really pleased with his side being in the top-five in the Kent Invicta League this season.

The Sidcup-based club defeated basement side Kent Football United 2-0 last weekend.

McCarthy said: “The squad showed great character in our game against Kent Football United last week.

“It was one of those games that we made difficult for ourselves.  We weren’t really threatened and we defended well but we were wasting great opportunities to score all game.

“However, through hard work and a bit of belief in the end we came out with the three points, so I was proud of them.”

Eltham Palace have claimed four wins, three draws and one defeat this season and are six points adrift of league leaders Hollands & Blair.

“Myself and Chris (McCarthy) think that the start to our season has been fantastic.

“We’ve had to mould a brand new squad together and we have been lucky it has clicked straight away.

“We are really pleased with all the players that have signed this season and there is a lot of depth and quality on the pitch that we truly believe could help us finish in a strong league position this season.

“It’s just important that we are all in it together for the long run and the personnel we have seem to be really happy with the way things are at the moment, which is important.”

Eltham Palace welcome tenth-placed Glebe at the weekend, before travelling to the league leaders on 25 April.

“The next two league games against Glebe and Hollands & Blair will be vital for our season,” said McCarthy.

“They will be very tough, but if we come through them with wins, it will put us right in the mix at the top of the league, so we will be prepared and see what happens with that.”
