We should definately be sitting in the top five, says Lordswood boss Jason Lillis

LORDSWOOD manager Jason Lillis says he is targeting a top-five finish this season.

The club booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Macron Southern Counties East Football League Challenge Cup after coming away from Croydon with a deserved 2-1 win on Wednesday night.

Charlie Smith and Joe Kane both scored inside the opening 22 minutes at the Croydon Sports Arena, before the hosts scored a controversial penalty through Karl Douglin on the stroke of half-time.

Lordswood have claimed 28 points from 18 games and are sitting in eighth-place and travel to Canterbury City tomorrow, a side that are one place above them on 29 points from 17 games.

The Lords are two points behind fifth-placed Beckenham Town.

“I think with a couple of better performances and a couple of wins we should definitely be sitting in the top five,” said Lillis.

“We’ve let ourselves down with silly results and the boys are disappointed with that, which is great that they are disappointed.

“But if we can have a good run in and we can get around the top five at Christmas then that’s great for us, especially we’re punching above our weight again.”

Looking ahead to tomorrow’s trip to Ashford to tackle a Canterbury City side that are enjoying their best campaign since their return, Lillis said: “Canterbury are a good footballing side.  They are above us in the league. We’ve got to go there and get something because we can swap places.

“We go into every game on merit.  We give everyone the respect.  We just have to worry about ourselves.”

When asked what he wants on his Christmas card list, Lillis replied: “A fit squad and a good run in! That’s all I can ask the boys because the commitment of the boys, like they showed at Croydon on Wednesday night, was out of this world and I’m proud of every one of them.”
