We're under the impression takeover deal is getting sorted around this time now, reveals Jamie Day
Monday 08th November 2010
WELLING UNITED player-manager Jamie Day says the club’s financial uncertainty looks set to be positively sorted out once and for all soon, writes Stephen McCartney.
The Wings midfielder has worked wonders so far this season on the pitch and despite his club having five points deducted due to their off-the-field concerns, Welling are still in the hunt for Blue Square Bet South honours.
Going into Tuesday’s Kent derby at Ebbsfleet United, Welling are in third place with 27 points from 14 games - just five points adrift of leaders Braintree Town.
They are the leading lights goalscoring wise, netting 33 league goals, and the players have put the club’s off-the-pitch worries at the back of the minds with a run of four straight wins and go into the Stonebridge Road clash on the back of a 6-0 win over St Albans City at Park View Road at the weekend.
www.kentishfootball.co.uk caught up with Day ahead of the Fleet clash.
“We’re really pleased with the last four weeks,” he said. “I thought we started very well on Saturday and we kept our good run of scoring going, so hopefully we can take that into the next couple of games that are coming up.
“I think we’ve got a big month, obviously derby games are important, but if you look at the next four or five games they’re all big games for us so we’ll have to use the 16 (players) that we’ve got and hopefully get results in the next month.
“The boys have been first class, I said that from the start of the season at pre-season. Everyone’s got on with the situation that we’re in, no-one’s moaned. I think there’s a good togetherness between the sixteen players that we’ve got and we’ve got to keep that. Hopefully that will be worth some points at the end of the season.”
Supporters are concerned about the latest news concerning the club’s future - the owners have until 1 December to find the funds to pay off it’s tax bill - but Day is confident there will still be a Welling United after judgement day.
“I haven’t really spoken to Barrie (Hobbins, the club owner) about it but we were under the impression it was getting sorted around this time now,” explained Day.
“We haven’t heard anything and it’s gone a little bit quiet, fingers crossed and hoping it’s in the solicitors’ hands and they’re dealing with it.
“I think it will be better once everything’s sorted out or it comes out and everyone knows where it stands.
“That’s why I think the players have been excellent because they haven’t let it effect them, they’ve just got on with their job and once it is sorted out and everyone knows the club is going to be there and they’ve got nothing to worry about then that takes the pressure of the boys and we can carry on with what we’re doing.”
Looking ahead to the Kent derby against sixth-placed Ebbsfleet United - a side that held Blue Square Bet Premier high-flyers to a goal-less draw in the FA Cup First Round at Kingsmeadow at the weekend - Day wants his side to keep scoring the goals to keep their play-off hopes alive.
“We’ve got to go there, regardless of what team they put out, and hopefully get three points and give us a bit of a gap between them and us in the league table,” said Day, five points better off than their neighbours.
“I look at the goalscoring charts and we’ve got five in there now so everyone’s chipping in with goals and that’s pleasing. We can score goals from all over the park. We’ve been scoring quite a few and I’m pleased with the chances we’re creating and taking.”
“We set a target at the start of the season and we were hoping to get into the play-off’s. If we done better than last year we’d be pleased as it’s progression. We’d like to, hopefully, stay in the top six and that all depends on injuries and stuff like that throughout the season.
“At the moment we’re pleased where we are in the table, hopefully we can keep that going and stay around that top six.”
