We play some good football so hopefully people will come out to watch us, says Jamie Day

Monday 17th December 2012
WELLING UNITED player-manager Jamie Day says he wants the club’s supporters to turn out in force to support his in-form side.

The Wings booked their place in the last sixteen of The FA Carlsberg Trophy thanks to Day’s first goal of the season, which sealed a 1-0 win at nine-man Woking at the weekend, which was their sixth win on the bounce.

It was the second Blue Square Bet (Conference) Premier side that Day’s side have defeated in the competiton, after beating Newport County 2-0 at home in the last round, and they face a third in the Third Round on 12 January 2013.

The Wings will welcome Grimsby Town to Park View Road, but before they can look forward to playing Grimsby for the first time, Day’s side have a vital Christmas period fast approaching.

The club will offer free admission to under 12’s (if accompanied by a paying adult) for the remainder of the season to boost attendances at Park View Road.

The club are offering discounted ticket prices for the games against Tonbridge Angels on Saturday, AFC Hornchurch (1 January) and Truro City (5 January) for the combined price of £27 (adults), £15 (concessions) and £18 (students).

Tommy Warrilow’s side missed out on a lucrative home tie against Bromley after they went down to a 3-0 defeat at Dartford at the weekend.

Welling United have slipped down a place to third in the Blue Square Bet (Conference) South table after Dover Athletic came from behind to beat Hayes & Yeading United 4-2 on Sunday afternoon.

Day guided Welling United to a third-place finish and only missed out on promotion after a heartbreaking 1-0 defeat at Dartford in the play-off final last season.

And once again he is working miracles on a limited budget this season and his side deserve to be supportered by larger numbers than they are at present.

Day said: “I’m disappointed with the attendances. We’re third in the table, having a good Trophy run and we don’t seem to be getting the required people in.

“It’s disappointing but the club have done a little gesture with under 12’s, maybe there’s some other incentives that they can possibly look at to bring some people in with a Christmas ticket or something like that.

“I think the club are trying and the commecial bloke Paul White is trying as well but people have to come and watch. We play some good football and we’re doing well so hopefully peole will come out.”

Looking forward to the Kent derby against Tonbridge Angels, Day said: “Hopefully it will be a good gate and people come out to watch.

“It’s not going to be an easy game.  They’ve got some good players in their team.  Tommy (Warrilow) knows us well and he’s watched us over the last couple of weeks so it’s not going to be easy.

“If we put in the same effort, work-rate and play a bit better than we did on Saturday at times then hopefully we can get another three points.”

Day added: “We drew at their place. Tonbridge are a big, strong physical side that can also play as well, with a decent goalscorer (Frannie Collin) up front so we need to put in another performance like we have been doing.”

Welling United travel to Essex to play AFC Hornchurch for an one o’clock kick-of on Boxing Day (26 December), before travelling to Sutton United on Saturday, 29 December, before the return fixture at home to AFC Hornchurch on New Years’ Day (3pm).

“But it’s not going to be easy. We’ve got some tough games coming up over the Christmas period so we just have to keep driving forward and pick up as many points as we can,” added Day.

“All the boys have got to look after themselves.  For a footballer, professional or semi-professional, it’s a busy schedule, it’s a busy time and we’ll manage them properly in training but there’s a lot of games coming thick and fast and the whole squad of players will be rotated round over the Christmas period.

“So far everyone’s played their part and they’re going to have to do that over the next two or three weeks’.
