We need to start picking up results, says Chatham Town assistant Peter Hawkins

CHATHAM TOWN assistant manager Peter Hawkins says the club must start climbing the league table.

The club were knocked out of The FA Trophy last night when they lost 1-0 to Worthing in the First Qualifying Round Replay at a rain-lashed Maidstone Road.

Chatham Town have been knocked out of all cup competitions and can now look forward to playing 28 league games between now and the end of the season.

They sit in fourteenth-place in the Ryman League Division One North table, having collected five wins, five draws and eight defeats.

Chatham Town welcome fourth-placed Brentwood Town to Maidstone Road on Saturday, before a Monday night trip to Ilford to tackle fourth-from-bottom Barkingside.

The Kent side are six points clear of the relegation zone and Hawkins wants the club to start rising up the table.

“The league form hasn’t been the greatest either,” admitted Hawkins.

“I think now as a group of players and the management we need to now take responsibility, start picking up results.

“It’s a big game on Saturday. They’re doing well and if we start picking up results and go on a good run, teams beat each other, and you win five or six on the bounce it puts you right in there.

“It’s no good looking beneath us. We’ve just got to look forward now and worry about our results. We need to start picking up results ourselves.

“Games come thick and fast in this league so hopefully we’ll get a win on Saturday and that builds a bit of confidence and then we can look forward to Monday and hopefully get another three points there.

“Six points over the two games starts to get the ball rolling and I think we’ve got a good squad.  It’s making sure we start lifting our game as individuals and show how we can perform and we need to show that on Saturday.”

Meanwhile, Chatham Town’s under 21’s welcome Charlton Athletic to Maidstone Road for a prestigious friendly on Tuesday, 18 November (7:30pm).

The Medway club are proud that seventeen players have progressed from the club’s under 18s and 21s sides into the first team squad since the start of last season.
