We must keep the run going, says Jenkins
CRAY WANDERERS manager Ian Jenkins has told his side to pick up maximum points from their two home games this week, writes Stephen McCartney.
The table-topping Wands remain six points clear at the top of the Ryman League Division One South table, following yesterday’s comfortable 3-1 win at fellow promotion chasers Sittingbourne, who slipped down one spot to sixth.
Cray’s seventh successive league victory has put even more pressure on second placed Kingstonian, who, despite having three games in hand, have to play them away from their Kingsmeadow home.
Having done all the hard work to get into their position at the summit, Jenkins, speaking to BBC Radio Kent yesterday, has told his side to pick up six points this week to remain in pole position.
“It’s been a good few weeks to be honest with you, where we’ve won a few games and other teams have slipped up and all we can do, and we’ve said it all the time, is to get our results,” he said.
“If you go back seven games ago and looked at the games we had to play, you would probably not see us winning the seven games.
“These games coming up, against Chipstead and Whyteleafe, you’d see there’s three points, they’re a must-win three points, but you know the way football works.
“We just have to go there (Hayes Lane) and apply ourselves exactly just like today and the previous seven and I’m sure we’d get the results.”
Looking down at Kingstonian boss Alan Dowson, whose side have blown their title bid, Jenkins hopes the league title is wrapped up before the Wands travel to Kingsmeadow on Easter Monday.
“Kingstonian’s (games in hand are) all away from home and they have to play us as well,” said Jenkins.
“That’s a key game, if we win that and if we win the rest of them, it’s in our hands.
“We’re top of the table, the goal difference is creeping up, we’re four goals away from Kingstonian.”
