We must bounce back tonight, insists Seager

Tuesday 24th October 2006
Whitstable Town manager Marc Seager criticised his players after losing their 100% record at Beckenham Town at the weekend, writes Stephen McCartney.
The Oystermen threw away a 2-0 lead at the break when Andy Constable and Michael Adcock scored from their only first half chances.

But Beckenham quickly clawed back their two goal deficit before the hour mark and a minute after they had Ashley Carew sent off for picking up two yellow cards, Constable rolled home his fifth goal of the season.

Beckenham, though, claimed a deserved point when Jones Awuah poked home his fifth goal of the season inside injury time.

But Seager was not happy with his side’s defending and demands better when they welcome Greenwich Borough to the Belmont tonight in their Kent League Cup Group C campaign.

“I weren’t happy with the first half defending,” he told www.kentishfootball.co.uk.    “I’m disappointed that we’ve dropped two points and with our performance today because it was that poor, I think it was a point gained.

“I said to them at half-time, “if we are going on and do anything in this league we can’t keep riding our luck” and I thought if anyone knows about football I thought Beckenham were the better side in the first half.

“I thought today wasn’t a very good performance and it showed a couple of weaknesses, which is great for me.”

Despite a good start to their campaign when teams found it difficult to score past Kevin Fewell, Seager is alarmed about their defensive frailties.

“We’re starting to concede goals again lately, which isn’t good,” he bemoaned.  “We started the season with teams not being able to get anything and we never looked like conceding neither.

“I’m saying that their all quality players and we should be doing the business but that side of it is just basis stuff, basic defending and we haven’t done it and that’s why we’re conceding goals.”

Striker Constable, who netted two “special” goals at Eden Park Avenue, was also singled out for criticism.

“I personally didn’t think that Andy was quite at the races but that’s the mark of a good player, mark of a top player,” said Seager.

”A player whose not quite in the game, not having a good day at the office, but he’s comes out with two special strikes and that’s why Andy is one of the most sought after strikers in the Kent League.

”That’s what good players are about so two good strikes but I know Andy and he’ll be disappointed with his overall performance.”

But Seager demands better from his side against resurgent Greenwich Borough tonight.

“They’re a good side Greenwich,” he said.  “We drew up there recently and it’s going to be a tough game for us.

”We need to try to bounce back now.  We dropped two points at Beckenham and it will be a test for the young lads.

”Whitstable Town always go out to win every game they participate in and that will never change as long as I’m in charge and hopefully we can bounce back, put in a performance.”
