We’ll stick in there and we’ll keep going right to the death, says Lew Watts

ERITH TOWN assistant manager Lew Watts says his side have not given up on the Kent League title race despite last night’s crushing defeat at rivals Herne Bay, writes Stephen McCartney.

The Dockers – who reached the Kent Senior Trophy final with a 3-0 win at Beckenham Town last weekend – were poor at Winch’s Field last night and crashed to a 4-0 defeat.

Greenhithe resident Watts, 36, admitted last night that his side “did not turn up”, as goals from Byron Walker (2), Dan Lawrence and substitute Peter Williams saw Herne Bay leapfrog over them into second place, level on points with leaders Hythe Town.

“If we would’ve got a result today then we’re hanging on the coat rails of Hythe, who have got a couple of games in hand and look like their going strong,” said Watts.

“Never say never!  We go to Lordswood on Saturday and hopefully we get something there.

“The other teams have lots of games to play now.  You know what it’s like when they come thick and fast, work commitments during the week, you get a couple of injuries and suspensions and you never know.

“But we’ll stick in there and we’ll keep going right to the death.”

Last season, former manager Steve O’Boyle guided the club to their highest ever position – fifth – and Watts and manager Tony Russell want to better that this term.

“We’ve got a Cup Final to look forward to so we’ll just keep going and see at the end of the season where it takes us,” added Watts.

“We’re still going to give it a go.  If we keep going for our last nine games and try and put this (defeat) behind us and go forward then we’ll see where it takes us.

“If we finish third or fourth – and a Cup Final - then we’ll class it as  a half sensible season.

“But it’s difficult because the run we went on we just felt we could carry it on but we’ll pick ourselves up from today and we’ll see where we finish up.

“Wherever we finish up, as long as we finish the season strong, then we’ll class it as a half sensible season.”
