Welling United unveil their new manager

Wednesday 16th May 2007

Welling United have today appointed Neil Smith, 35, as their new manager - replacing Adrian Pennock who left Park View Road earlier in the month to join Stoke City.

Smith was recently the caretaker manager of Blue Square Premier outfit Woking in March, saving them from a possible relegation.

But despite finishing in 15th place, he failed to get the job on a full-time basis and was released.

The Wings had 24 applications for the vacancy, but club secretary Mr Barrie Hobbins was impressed with Smith’s calibre.

He told www.wellingunited.com : “Neil Smith stood out as the one and right person for the job.

“Neil lives locally, has the right character and we are delighted with the appointment.”

Smith made over 400 league and cup appearances for various clubs, including Gillingham, Fulham, Reading and Woking.

Smith is expected to name his assistant shortly.

Meanwhile, midfielder Jamie Day has signed a two-year contract with Blue Square Premier club Grays Athletic, where he’ll join former Wings striker, Danny Kedwell.

And the Wings’ annual Park View Road date with Charlton Athletic has been arranged for Wednesday, 11th July.
