Mark Goldberg re-appoints Jamie Day as Welling United boss: I have recognised that it is too ambitious of me to be effective as both a football club manager and an owner whilst running alongside other business interests

MARK GOLDBERG has stepped down as manager after 27 games in charge of Welling United and has made the popular decision to re-appoint Jamie Day, who has been coach for their last six games.

Goldberg, who guided Bromley to their first title in 54 years in April 2015, became Welling United’s new owner in the summer and installed himself as manager after taking charge of the club’s last two games of their ill-fated Vanarama National League campaign in April.

The Wings are now second-from-bottom in the Vanarama National League South table having collected four wins, three draws and have suffered 12 league defeats, eight of them being at Park View Road.

Goldberg’s record as manager at the club stands at seven wins, four draws and 16 defeats, including last season.

Goldberg has turned to Day and former boss Adrian Pennock, who comes in as consultant, to maintain the club’s Vanarama National League South status, while he continues his business interests.

“After due consideration, I have decided to step aside from first team management duties as I have recognised that it is too ambitious of me to be effective as both a football club manager and an owner whilst running alongside other business interests,” said Goldberg in a statement which was published last night on www.wellingunited.com.

“Jamie Day has agreed to step up as first team manager alongside Ady Pennock, who has also agreed to join the club as a consultant, to assist us during this transitional period.

“I will still work closely to support both Jamie, Ady and Harry Wheeler.

“I feel privileged to have had more than a decade in non-league football management, from youth football development through to first team at every level from Ryman through to Conference National and to have been involved in a number of great Cup runs (whilst the manager of Bromley).

“Now I have to concentrate on supporting my management team in the way others have supported me in the past and to ensure that we get through this difficult period and avoid relegation before moving forward together.”

Day will be well known to Wings fans having led the club to the Conference South title in 2012-13 having been beaten in the Play-Off Final by Dartford the previous season.

Day was also a fans’ favourite as a player where he led by example, being a committed central midfielder. Day’s teams are known for their work rate and commitment to the club.

Goldberg watched from the stands during his last game in charge on Tuesday night as Welling United knocked holders Dartford out of the Kent Reliance Senior Cup Second Round and have been drawn at home to Bromley in the Quarter-Finals.

The game finished tied at 2-2 before the Wings held their nerve from the spot to win 4-1 on penalties. On-loan Millwall goalkeeper Harry Girling, 18, saved from Ryan Hayes and Alex Brown.

Pennock was Day’s manager at Welling United in Day’s playing career. Pennock joined the Wings in 2005 and led the Wings until he left to run Stoke City’s academy after the 2006-07 season. Pennock then went on to become first team coach at Premier League Stoke City.

Day and Pennock successfully joined forces again when Pennock was manager at Forest Green Rovers, Pennock took the Gloucestershire club to the higher reaches of the National League before he was sensationally sacked before the Play-Off Semi-Final last season.

Welling United travel to league rivals Concord Rangers in The Buildbase FA Trophy Third Qualifying Round on Saturday.
