Our Christmas schedule couldn't be harder, says Welling United assistant Hugo Langton
WELLING UNITED assistant manager Hugo Langton says his aim is to finish in the final play-off berth at the end of the season.
The Wings go into the Christmas period sitting in ninth-place in the Vanarama National League South table with 32 points from their 21 league outings.
Jamie Coyle’s men are only three points adrift of seventh-placed Truro City, who occupy the final play-off berth.
Welling United travel to fifth-placed Chelmsford City on Saturday, a side that are only four points clear of the Wings.
Welling United then host leaders Dartford on Boxing Day, Tuesday 26 December (13:00), before making the swift return to Princes Park Stadium on Monday 1 January 2018 (15:00).
“To be fair our game load isn’t bad. This year and last year the National League have seen sense, I like to think, and not tried to cram as many games as they can in,” said Langton.
“Some of the scheduling in the Football League and Bostik League is absolutely crazy and gives players little chance of recovery.
“Having said that, opponent wise our schedule couldn’t be harder! We play Chelmsford away and then two games with Dartford.
“Both those clubs are expecting to win the league, that’s their expectation, so there’s a lot of pressure on both clubs.
“Our target remains the same, which is going into the final month of the season and we want to be in and around that seventh-place. That would be a tremendous progression for the football club.”
Langton had this Christmas message for the Park View Road faithful.
“To the Welling fans, on behalf of the players and staff, thank you for backing us and we wish you all a very Merry Christmas. We hope to see as many of you as possible at Chelmsford on Saturday.”
