It’s an important game, in terms of our league position and where Altrincham are , says Welling United boss Dean Frost

WELLING UNITED manager Dean Frost says his side must avoid defeat against fellow strugglers Altrincham tomorrow.

Frost takes charge of his first home game since taking charge from Loui Fazakerley, with his home-town club siting third-from-bottom in the Vanarama National League table on 25 points from 29 games.

The Wings are five points adrift of fifth-from-bottom Altrincham going into the vital Park View Road clash.

“It’s an important game, in terms of our league position and where Altrincham are – they sit just above us,” said Frost.

“I will set up to try and win the game, which I will always do, but at the same time it’s important we don’t lose either.

“There are still plenty of points to play for.

“We have to remember, we still have Altrincham to play away near the end of the season, which may be a defining game.”

Welling United came away from FC Halifax Town with a 1-1 draw in Frost’s first game in charge before going down to a 1-0 defeat at Braintree Town in midweek.

“I’m pleased with the reaction and response of the players in training and in the two tough away games that we’ve had recently,” said Frost, who is assisted by Barry Ashby.

“A change of management is never easy for players to deal with during the season but all of the squad’s attitude has been spot on since we’ve arrived.

“They’ve demonstrated a desire to take things on board and a willingness to learn and a drive to improve and that’s all I can ask for.

“The performance at Halifax showed that there is lots of character and spirit in the side and it also showed what good footballers we have at the club.

“I felt we thoroughly deserved that point.

“At Braintree the game was lost in the first ten minutes.  We didn’t start well, we gave away a sloppy goal and after that didn’t threaten or create enough pressure around Braintree’s goal.

“But although I don’t think we did enough to win the game, I do believe we did enough to earn a point.”
