We are not mathematically safe yet and so we must be at our best in the next few games to make sure we are as soon as possible, says Welling United joint-caretaker manager Harry Wheeler

WELLING UNITED joint caretaker-manager Harry Wheeler says his side must show the same work ethic again when they travel down to Brighton tomorrow.

Wheeler was delighted with his players’ during their goal-less draw at home to Dartford in midweek, a result that sees the Wings climb up to fifteenth-place in the Vanarama National League South table on 33 points from 31 games.

“I felt we set a standard and certain level of work ethic in the players’ heads before the game on Tuesday night against Dartford that they had to be at throughout the 90 minutes and made sure they knew that nothing less would be accepted,” said Wheeler.

“I thought they applied this excellently and now can’t go back on that level.  They have set the bar.

“It was a fair result, I would say, with both teams having chances and both goalkeepers being in excellent form.

“We probably shaded the chances on goal and that’s a good start for Michael Thalassitis in his first game with us and Jamie Slabber coming back in, as most came from those two.”

Whitehawk welcome Welling United to The Enclosed Ground sitting in the bottom four on 27 points from their 31 league games and are only a couple of points clear of the relegation zone.

Welling United, meanwhile, are eight points clear of the relegation zone, that contains Gosport Borough, Bishop’s Stortford and Margate.

“We will have to be at the same level again and this starts with our work rate and competitive mind set,” said Wheeler.

“Our players’ ability will come through as a result of that and we will then give ourselves a good chance of winning the game, which we will be going there to do.

“We are not mathematically safe yet and so we must be at our best in the next few games to make sure we are as soon as possible.”
