We'll do our level best to knock holders out, says Lovell

ASHFORD TOWN get their Championship Manager League Cup (aka the Ryman League Cup) campaign under way tonight when holders Tilbury come to Homelands, writes Mike Green.

And following Saturday's 0-0 Kent derby draw with Chatham Town, manager Steve Lovell has called for his side to continue their improved form against the Cup holders.

Lovell speaking to www.kentishfootball.co.uk after the draw at the Maidstone Road Sports Ground said, "Today's performance shows what we can do, and we must keep playing like that every game.  We're got the holders of the League Cup on Wednesday night and we know that they won’t give up their Cup without a fight."

The game comes as a relief for Lovell, who's thread bare squad is going to be stretched.

"We picked up a couple more injuries today and our keeper Darren (Ibrahim) shouldn't have played today as he's injured but I didn't have a choice.  At least I have that choice on Wednesday."

"It gives us a chance to try a few things where we can as with so many League games coming up over the next few weeks it’s important that every one of my squad who's fit is match fit just in case the (injury) list gets any longer."

The Welshman added: "It’s goes without saying that I'd dearly love to put out my strongest team and have a really good run in the competition, but we've so many knocks that that just will not be possible."

With fans up and down the country in all levels of the game showing a degree of apathy towards the early stages of cup competitions, Lovell was pragmatic about the level of support his side will tonight.

He conceded: "Our regular fans will be there of course, but the floaters - the ones clubs like ours need to win over and get through the gate - will look at the options.

“A possible cold night at Homelands, or a night in front of the fire with Corrie on the telly?  What would you choose?" shrugged the former Welsh international striker.

"At least we're not up against the Champions League this week!  But what I will promise anyone who turns up is that we will do our level best to dump the holders out!  Whether our best will be good enough...  we'll just have to wait until around half nine on Wednesday night wont we?"

The Nuts & Bolts will be aiming to join Kent rivals Chatham Town, Dartford, Maidstone United, Margate, Sittingbourne and Tonbridge Angels in the third round, having all won their ties last night.
