We have had a brilliant season, says Bromley coach Hugo Langton

Monday 07th April 2014
BROMLEY coach Hugo Langton says it will be an outstanding achievement to finish in a play-off position at the end of the club’s best ever season in the Conference South.

Hopes were high among the Hayes Lane faithful that manager Mark Goldberg would lead the club to their first league title since 1961, but a string of injuries and poor form in March hit the club hard and they have lost ground on tomorrow’s opponents.

Bromley enjoyed an eleven point lead at the summit, but full-time outfit Eastleigh have took advantage and now lead the Skrill (Conference) South table with 76 points from 36 games.

Sutton United have sneaked into second place with 71 points from 38 games, followed by Bromley (70 points from 37 games), Ebbsfleet United (65 points from 37) and in-form Havant & Waterlooville (57 points from 35).

Bromley were defeated 1-0 by Havant & Waterlooville at the weekend, which was the Ravens’ sixth league defeat in ten games since the beginning of March.

“I felt we dominated the game on Saturday from start to finish.  We were unfortunate to come away with nothing,” said Langton, who is coming to the end of his first season at Hayes Lane.

“We’ve hit the woodwork twice and forced their keeper into some fine saves.  Sadly for us we got undone by one ball over the top.”

With Eastleigh now six points clear of Goldberg’s side, tomorrow night’s game is classed as a must-win game if Bromley are to retain their slender title hopes.

Eastleigh make the trip up from Hampshire on an eight-match unbeaten run and are destined to claim the league title, after being knocked out of the play-offs in the semi-finals by Dover Athletic last season.

But Chris Kinnear’s side lost the play-off final at Salisbury City so it was the Wiltshire side that joined champions Welling Untied in the Conference Premier.

“The Eastleigh game will no doubt be a good game.  They’re a very good side,” said Langton.

“Let’s be honest about the situation, everyone from the off fancied Eastleigh to be strong over the season and they have been.

“For us to be in the top five is an outstanding achievement from the players.  I keep hearing that Bromley are finished, the wheels have come off – NONSENSE!

“We have had a brilliant season. We will fight to the end but being in the play-offs is beyond everyone associated with Bromley, wildest dreams.

“We are not quite there yet mind. I think we need two more wins.

“There’s no doom and gloom about the changing room, quite the opposite.

“We are loving the fact that with five games to go we are still in with a shout with two very good sides in Eastleigh and Sutton.

“We’ll just keep doing our best, you can’t ask for anything more.”
