We have only been together 10 weeks and we are getting stronger and stronger each week and the more time we have together and we are adding and tweaking gradually to be where we feel we need to be, says VCD Athletic boss Nick Davis

VCD ATHLETIC manager Nick Davis says his club experienced a perfect opening day of the new Isthmian League South East Division season.

The Crayford based side kicked-off their new campaign with a 2-1 win over Whitehawk at Oakwood last Saturday, bouncing back from their 6-0 defeat at Cray Valley (Paper Mills) in The FA Cup Preliminary Round.

The Brighton-based side took the lead through Marvin Hamilton’s fifth minute goal and were looking on course to claim the three points going into the final six minutes but two late goals from Malachi Hudson sealed the victory for Davis’ side.

“The game was one of few chances and the defences were certainly on top,” said Davis.

“They had the better of the first-half and we had the better of the second- half and as the game went on we looked the stronger.

“We showed a lot of character, I thought, to come from a goal behind to win and especially after the disastrous performance the week before.

“It was a perfect day for the club with 169 in attendance, a win and there was a real buzz around the place.

“Whitehawk are a good side and will be in the top five in my opinion.”

The Vickers travel to Whitstable Town tomorrow before heading to Three Bridges next Tuesday.

Lloyd Blackman’s side started their league campaign with a 3-2 defeat at Sittingbourne on the opening day of the season.

“We have now two tough away games against Whitstable Town and Three Bridges,” said Davis.

“Lloyd will have them well drilled and organised and it’s always a tough place to go.

“However, we go into Saturday’s game full of confidence after last week’s 2-1 win against Whitehawk.

“This group have only been together 10 weeks and we are getting stronger and stronger each week and the more time we have together and we are adding and tweaking gradually to be where we feel we need to be.”
