Tonight's team-news:

Tuesday 04th September 2007

All five of our Ryman Premier League sides are in action tonight, with four of them knowing they must do better if they’re to climb up the table, writes Stephen McCartney.

Margate are our highest ranked club, sitting in sixth place, and Robin Trott has some injury doubts ahead of their trip to Hastings United.

Jay Saunders (hernia), Jimmy Jackson (calf), Steve McKimm, Rob Haworth (hamstring), and Charlie Side (broken nose) are all doubtful.

Striker Side, playing with a broken nose that he sustained against East Thurrock, netted a hat-trick inside the opening nine minutes of Saturday’s 3-1 win over Kentish rivals Tonbridge Angels, at Hartsdown Park at the weekend.

It was nearly as good as John Fahy’s hat-trick for Margate against Tonbridge back in 1968, when Fahy scored his three goals in just 150 seconds.

“It was really enjoyable to get the three goals,” Side told www.margate-fc.com afterwards.

“To be fair to the lads they created them for me. I was there to tuck them away.”

Ramsgate boss Jim Ward wants his side to bounce back from their 3-0 defeat at Harlow Town - and beat his former club Maidstone United at Southwood Stadium tonight.

“Three-nil flattered them, they were never three-nil better than us,” Ward said EXCLUSIVELY to www.kentishfootball.co.uk.

“We made a mistake on the first goal, not like my keeper, he got a soft hand to it and the ball fell into the net.

“They maybe have edged it during the first half but nothing really, but we played ever so well in the second half, the first twenty minutes at least.

“Both Lee Minshull and Steffan Ball missed sitters at 1-0. If those two go in, we go on and win the game, but at this level if you don’t take your chances….

Despite winning five trophies for Maidstone United, Ward is treating tonight’s match as any other.

“It’s just another game for me to be honest,” he said. “Maidstone means nothing to me at all. I won them five trophies and now I’m at Ramsgate. All I see is another local derby.

“I’ve gone from Maidstone for two or three seasons now, back at my spiritual home, Ramsgate. I see Maidstone as an opportunity for three points.”

Despite the Stones only have Leyton below them in the table, Ward warns that tonight’s derby will not be easy.

“We’ve gone down that road before and Harlow, everybody thought it was three points for the taking,” said Ward.

“If you don’t turn up and give it 100%, they will beat us. Maidstone are no different. “I’ve seen them twice, they’re not a bad side. Their position in the league doesn’t tell the full story.”

Ward will be without central defenders, Ollie Schulz (medial ligament damage to knee), and Will Graham (ankle), whilst Dean Hill nurses a hamstring injury.

Schulz, currently in plaster, is expected to be out of action for at least a couple of months.

The Stones will be without the services of influential striker Lynden Rowland as they head to Southwood Stadium tonight looking for their first away win of the season.

Rowland picked up a slight hamstring injury last Friday, which forced him off at half-time, but the club are hopeful a week’s rest will enable him to return to the squad at the weekend.

Good news is that Welshman Andy Martin has recovered from flu and will return to the squad and midfielder Jimmy Strouts looks set to join the squad.

Tonight also marks defender Mario McNish’s last game before serving his one-match suspension, which will see him miss the trip to Hendon this weekend.

“We know that we’ll have to work hard if we are to get anything tonight,” said Stones joint-manager Alan Walker, when previewing the game on www.maidstoneunited.co.uk.

“They are a very hardworking side and have a strong work ethic.

“However, we too do have a strong team ethic, which has started to show in our performances of late, so it looks set to be a tough game but a game I’m looking forward to.”

Folkestone Invicta boss Neil Cugley doesn’t have any injury worries for their Kent derby at Tonbridge Angels tonight.

But he goes into the game at the Betterview Longmead Stadium knowing his side must start picking up points, especially having won just once from their first five outings - just like the Angels.

“I think they’re the same, they’ve only won one, they will be wanting to win,” Cugley said EXCLUSIVELY to www.kentishfootball.co.uk.

He added: “It’s always nice up there, I love us playing there. It’s a nice ground, good atmosphere, especially at night.”

Tonbridge Angels player-manager, Tony Dolby can hand right-back/striker, Ray Powell his first start of the season, as the fans’ favourite has now completed his five-match ban.

Meanwhile, in the Blue Square Premier, Ebbsfleet United welcome newly promoted side Histon to Stonebridge Road.

Paul McCarthy misses the next three games after being sent off for deliberate handball on Saturday - a 1-0 home defeat at the hands of Stevenage Borough.

Gary McDonald (Achilles), Mark Ricketts (knee), Neil Barrett (ankle) and Sacha Opinel (calf) have all been ruled out but Mark DeBolla’s hamstring has cleared up.
