We're sorry we couldn't give you that dream of promotion this season after getting so close to it, says hurting Tonbridge Angels boss Steve McKimm
TONBRIDGE ANGELS manager Steve McKimm says he’s still feeling gutted and hurting from last night’s play-off heartbreak at East Thurrock United.
The Angels suffered a 2-0 defeat at Rookery Hill in Corringham, as John Coventry’s side scored twice in the first half through central defender Rickie Hayles and winger Ben Marlow.
Tonbridge fans battled through horrendous traffic through Dartford to watch their side, singing their hearts out as their promotion dream died in Essex.
East Thurrock United will host Dulwich Hamlet in Monday’s Ryman Premier League Play-Off Final after Gavin Rose’s side, fifth-placed finishers, came away from runners-up Bognor Regis Town with a 1-0 win, courtesy of Ashley Carew’s 90th minute free-kick.
The winner will win promotion to the Vanarama National League South for the first time, along with champions Hampton & Richmond Borough, who have experience of that level.
McKimm posted a message on Tonbridge Angels’ fans forum with his thoughts on last night.
He said: “Still gutted and hurting from the result last night, as I’d imagine you all are.
“The group of players we assembled have put everything into training and matches this season for the club and deserve a big pat on the back.
“The board have been supportive of me as a manager which has made my job easier.
“The staff around me have been brilliant.”
Tonbridge Angels took around 350 fans to last night’s game and McKimm gave his thanks for their backing throughout the season that saw the club finish in fourth-place in the table after finishing fifth-from-bottom in McKimm’s first season in charge.
“You supporters are a credit to yourselves and this wonderful club that you follow week in week out and long may it continue,” said the manager.
“We as a group are sorry we could’nt give you that dream of promotion this season after getting so close to it.
“Hopefully after a week off for me and a good rest for the players, we’ll come back stronger and wiser next season.
“Thanks for your support.”
