Thanet charities benefit from Ramsgate's success
Local charities in Thanet have received cash funding thanks to the recent success of Ryman Premier League club Ramsgate, writes Stephen McCartney.
In addition to the sports-related benefits that the Southwood Stadium club has brought to the community through it’s coaching and soccer school programmes, and the pride of the town at the success of it’s first team, three local charities have received four-figure sums.
In 2005 the Rams achieved back-to-back promotions to the Ryman Premier League, but they also became the only club at their level to reach the first round proper of the FA Cup that season across the whole country, losing to a Nuneaton Borough side that played two leagues above them and went on to hold Premiership side Middlesbrough to a replay.
This feat, which equalled Ramsgate’s golden days fifty years earlier, saw them despatch clubs from higher leagues, such as Walton & Hersham and Cirencester Town.
As a result, Ramsgate has been able to facilitate donations totalling £5,000 from the FA Community Shield Fund, from which £2,000 has been passed on to Thanet Mind, with £1,500 going to both the Umbrella Centre and the Royal School for Deaf Children.”
