Thamesmead manager Keith McMahon hails his good fortnight

KEITH McMAHON says rival clubs are starting to take notice of his Thamesmead Town side following their impressive
2-0 away win at East Thurrock United last weekend, writes Stephen McCartney.
Goals from Marcos Perona and Andy Constable secured the win over their title rivals and the Bayliss Avenue outfit leapfrogged over John Coventry’s side into second place in the Ryman League Division One North table after 10 games, just two points adrift of Enfield Town, who have a game in hand.
“We’ve had a good fortnight, including the Trophy replay (win at Heybridge Swifts),” McMahon told www.kentishfootball.co.uk.
“We’re doing well at the moment, a couple of good wins. We were absolutely outstanding at East Thurrock last Saturday and deserved to win and then Tuesday night was interesting (winning 5-2 at Margate in the Championship Manager Cup). I left six regulars out of the starting eleven as Margate did as well and the players that came in played well and gave us a comfortable result really.”
When asked whether his side can be classed as genuine title contenders, McMahon replied, “I would say so! I think the teams up the top know us now and after the result against East Thurrock might make people sit up.
“We’ve beaten East Thurrock and Enfield Town away this year and we just keep being consistent every week and I think that’s the difference between us this year and last year.
“I’m not going to tell you we’re going to win it as there’s eleven teams that have got a chance and we’ve definitely got a chance of getting into the play-off’s, but it’s going to be difficult, but I’d say we’re contenders.”
Thamesmead created history in the FA Carlsberg Trophy by winning away to Heybridge Swifts in a replay that lasted 120 minutes after the two sides played out a goal-less draw at Bayliss Avenue, a couple of weeks ago.
Their reward is a trip to Great Wakering Rovers on Saturday - a side that are sitting in the bottom six with nine points from nine games.
“We’ve gone over there and always have a tough game,” warned McMahon. “They’ve picked up some results as well recently and are on a good run of form. They’ve signed a few new players so it’s not going to be easy, the pitch is normally lovely over there, which suits us.
“But there’s a little bit about us. When you get on a winning run there’s a bit of a swagger, confidence is sky high and everyone’s playing for each other, unlike a few clubs, maybe, with a bit of unrest at the moment, we’re quite nicely put.”
McMahon added: “We seem to be making history every year, every week. The last round was the first time we won a game in the Trophy and last Saturday was the first time we won away at East Thurrock so a win Saturday will be the furthest the club’s ever gone in the competition and some much needed prize money as well.”
