Thamesmead Town boss Terry Spillane thanks fans for their support this season

Friday 25th December 2015

THAMESMEAD TOWN boss Terry Spillane thanks the club’s new supporters that have started taking an interest in the club this season.

The decision to switch their midweek nights to a Monday has paid off as the club are attracting more fans to Bayliss Avenue.

The Mead go into Christmas sitting in the eleventh-place in the Ryman League Division One North table on 38 points and go into their second half of the season chasing a play-off place.

Spillane’s men are six points adrift of fifth-placed side Cheshunt and they go into Monday’s trip to Aveley in confident spirits after holding third-placed AFC Hornchurch to a 1-1 draw in their last game.

“I’m hoping the boys repay the visit that they had here because Aveley beat us 2-0 over here and deservedly so,” recalled the Mead boss.

“They played well that day and we didn’t.  That’s only one of the two games that we’ve lost at home this year so hopefully we go there with the right attitude, positive mind and pick up some points.”

The Mead were seconds away from nicking a victory over AFC Hornchurch last Monday. Paul Vines headed them into a 66th minute lead before former Bromley striker Leon McKenzie headed in a last-gasp equaliser.

“First and foremost I’d like to thank them because they’ve supported us from the start of the season, even away from home we’re getting a following,” Spillane said of the club’s new fan-base.

“Just stick with us and it does make a difference when the boys come off and they do see green and white scarves around the ground. It does make a massive difference, all be it small in number, it makes a difference for us getting more fans through the gate, then we’re doing something right.

“We try to play football, it ain’t always possible. At the end of the day it’s about getting results but we do try to play football.

“I think the supporters here realise that 99.9% of the games that have been over here and away our boys put in a shift in.  We ain’t always pretty but the boys put in a shift.”

Thamesmead Town’s next home game is against their local rivals Phoenix Sports on 2 January 2016 (15:00).

Spillane said: “I’m looking forward to that!”

“That will be a big game. That will get a big crowd. Hopefully it should be a big crowd and the game goes our way.

“It will be a tough game. There’s no easy games now, we said it all season. We haven’t had an easy game. We beat Barkingside 5-2 the other week and that was not an easy game.

“We’re going to focus on having a Christmas drink together now and getting ready for our first game at Aveley before we start thinking about the Phoenix game.”
