We are looking for a reaction from the players after our first loss, says Thamesmead Town boss Terry Spillane

THAMESMEAD TOWN boss Terry Spillane says he wants his side to bounce back from their first defeat of the season at Waltham Abbey tomorrow.

The Mead lost top spot in the Ryman League Division One North table after losing 2-1 at home to Aveley on Bank Holiday Monday.

Aveley leapfrogged over the Mead, level on 13 points, as both Thameside clubs have won four, drawn one and lost one of their seven league outings.

Thamesmead Town travel to second-from-bottom side Waltham Abbey, a side that have drawn two and lost four of their six league games this season.

“We are expecting another tough game tomorrow at Waltham Abbey,” said Spillane.

“They are always a good footballing side so we will have to be at our best to get something from the game.

“Obviously we are looking for a reaction from the players after our first loss last Monday.

“Our start to the season has been excellent and our squad of both experienced players and youngsters has really gelled and are a close knit group.

“Defensively we’ve been outstanding and that’s something we wanted to instil in the team.

“It’s very early days yet, of course, but the signs of improving on our mid-table position are there.”

Thamesmead Town return to Bayliss Avenue on Monday night (7:45pm) when they entertain Witham Town.

Witham Town go into their home game with Wroxham tomorrow sitting in the bottom four, having drawn two of their five games.

The two sides met in Essex on 25 August, with The Mead coming home with a 3-1 win under their belt.

Spillane said: “I’m expecting another very difficult game as we beat them just last week.  They are a team with some excellent players who can and will upset a few teams that underestimate them.

“In my opinion it makes it more difficult when you’re playing teams within a few weeks of each other!

“How many times have you seen a team win two or three nil then watch the same teams play a week or two later and the result is reversed! It happens quite often doesn’t it?

“So we will have to get our team focused and in the right mind-set for that game as soon as our game is over on Saturday.”
