Stones release two to cutback their big squad

Friday 24th August 2007

Maidstone United joint-manager, Alan Walker explained why the Ryman Premier League club had released Jason Barton, 28, and striker, Simon Austin, 26, today.

I would like to put on record my thanks to both Jason and Simon, they have been a credit to the club as well as great servants and I wish them well in their future careers, Walker, 46, told www.maidstoneunited.co.uk.

“Both players I regard as friends so making the decision was even more difficult, but we have a very large squad of 21 and when you can only pick 16, we had to make some cutbacks, not only to save money, but also to make the squad more manageable.”

The Stones, currently bottom of the table following defeats to Horsham (0-2) and Hastings United (0-4), travel to fifth-placed side, Chelmsford City tomorrow.

Striker, Lynden Rowland, 32, is expected to be recalled into the squad for their trip to Melbourne Park.

Walker said: “We’ve missed his work-rate up front so it’s great to have him back in the squad.”

Also fully recovered is Mario McNish and Rob Owen is continuing his road to recovery and is hopeful of a return soon.

Maidstone United welcome Carshalton Athletic (next Tuesday) and Staines Town (Friday, 31st August) to Bourne Park, Sittingbourne.
