Soccer Shorts: Tonbridge Angels bid for Hornets leading scorer
Unfortunately due to the affects of the flu, www.kentishfootball.co.uk are not able to attend any matches today - or inform you of any postponements - so please check with all clubs before travelling.
But we bring you news from Bromley,Tonbridge Angels and Ashford Town as well as the fourth round draw of the Setanta Shield.
With Bobby Bowry unavailable due to work commitments Simon Osborn and Derek Parnham took charge of the session.
Speaking at the club on Friday morning, Bromley chairman Jerry Dolke, told www.bromleyfc.net : “We had a very useful meeting with all the playing staff last night.
“There is absolutely no need for any kind of knee-jerk reaction at the moment. We have people at the club who have the experience and knowledge needed to stabilize things and take us forward.
“Bobby, Simon and Del will be in charge of team matters, starting with the match against Eastleigh".
All three men will be in the dugout for the Blue Square South fixture at the weekend as The Lillywhites look to complete their first league double of the season.
The Hampshire club make their first ever visit to Hayes Lane and will be desperate to avenge the 4-1 home defeat they suffered just four weeks ago.
Bromley are still ravaged by injury, Francis Duku (ankle) and Tutu Henriques (hamstring) are the latest players on the treatment table and both are rated extremely doubtful for the match
Simon Glover has undergone successful keyhole surgery on his groin injury and hopes to be back in training soon.
After Mark Goldberg's resignation early on Wednesday morning it can also now be confirmed that Alan Reeves has left the club.
Horsham boss John Maggs has confirmed that the club has received an official approach from Tonbridge Angels for leading scorer Carl Rook.
The Kent club, now managed by Maggs' former assistant Tommy Warrilow, are rebuilding their side after a poor start to the season and are hopeful of adding the striker to their squad following the departure of the prolific Jon Main to AFC Wimbledon last month.
Speaking on the official Horsham website www.hornetsreview.co.uk Maggs said: "I have done everything I can to try and keep Carl at this club.
The Angels have already had a four-figure offer turned down by their Ryman Premier League rivals, who play each other at the Betterview Longmead Stadium on Boxing Day.
Maggs added: "But it's down to the player now. I have matched Tonbridge's financial offer but he only lives 20 minutes from their ground (in Sittingbourne) so we'll have to wait and see."
Rook joined the Hornets from Dover Athletic in January 2006, was the club's leading goalscorer last season, and currently tops the list this campaign with 12 goals.
As well as Warrilow, Rook would be teaming up with former Hornets team-mate John Westcott who made the switch to the Longmead Stadium three weeks ago.
Ashford Town owner Mr Don Crosbie has revealed that “mercenary” defender Rob Gillman, who joined the club during the close season from Blue Square South club Bishop’s Stortford, where he was skipper, has been released.
The Ryman League Division One South club has signed Lee Hockey from rivals’ Sittingbourne, whilst 18-year-old midfielder Joe Hitchins has been shipped out on loan to Kent League side Tunbridge Wells, who are managed by former Ashford reserve team boss, Mike Robbins.
Speaking on the fans’ forum at www.ashfordtownfc.co.uk Mr Crosbie said: “Rob Gillman has been wanting away virtually from day one and despite him being on contract and I personally paying him a £1,000 signing on fee, he was talking to other clubs about a move.
“He could not afford to pay the signing on fee back and he thought he was too good a player for this level.
“My view is that a deal is a deal and contractually he should have stuck by his word.
“Still, that’s football and Steve Lovell has released him because we do not want any player at this club who is only here for the money and in any event they destroy club morale.
“I hope Rob finds what he is looking for but more importantly gets what he deserves.
“Steve has secured the services of Lee Hockey from Sittingbourne and Hastings fame and he comes as a first-rate utility player and very competent centre half.
“In order to improve Joe Hitchins’ fitness and recover his confidence it was decided to loan him out to Tunbridge Wells and we are monitoring his progress, which is already proving positive.”
