Smith: I want to test myself at a higher level
Honest midfielder, Darren Smith, 30, whose just completed his move to Maidstone United, has explained his reasons for leaving Chatham Town, writes Stephen McCartney.
Writing on the fans’ forum at www.chathamtownfc.net, Smith, who joins the Stones at a time that they’re currently at the foot of the Ryman Premier League table, felt it was time for one last chance to play at a higher level of football.
“There are often rumours and thoughts as to why someone does it and the most common though is money,” he said following his move from Ryman League Division One South Chatham.
“Well, in this case it was a horrible decision as it was never that and was a lot more personal.
“I assured (Chatham Town manager at the time) Steve Binks when I signed, I would not be off to any club in the same league as I did not see the point in playing the same level for a bit more money, and I just wanted to enjoy myself.
“This opportunity was different. At Chatham, I enjoyed my football and this showed in goals scored, created, work-rate.
“Being captain of late has been a massive honour in the absence of Tom (Binks) and I wish him a speedy return (from his pelvis injury) and thank the club for letting me carry out that duty in his absence.
“But I have always felt since leaving Eastbourne Borough after one season, I stepped out of the Conference South too quickly, based purely on the travelling from home to the club.
“I have regretted that since I did it but never thought that I would get a chance to prove myself again at a higher level.
“Maidstone is different. They are at that higher level.
“They are potentially a massive club in non-league circles and certainly currently one of the largest teams in the county.
“There is no travelling involved and so I give myself a great chance of being fresh and fit week in, week out, and have the best chance I can to show that I can cut it still.
“Having just turned 30, I am not sure I would get an opportunity as good as this again, and to turn it down would be something I would regret.
“I will certainly give it my all as always to ensure that I am successful, and if it doesn’t work, then I tried.
“I explained to (Chatham Town manager) Phil Miles that I feel comfortable in the Ryman South, but I don’t feel finished yet and still have a good few years left.
“This is a challenge that will ensue on a personal level and also a challenge for Maidstone as they seek to establish themselves in the (Ryman) Premier.”
