Smith drops down two divisions to sign for Canterbury City

CANTERBURY CITY have this week unveiled versatile midfielder Ben Smith, 21, as their first summer signing - from neighbouring Kent League side Herne Bay, writes Stephen McCartney.

Smith captained Brighton University before signing for Herne Bay where he played regularly in both the reserves and first team.

Despite Bay supporters voicing concern over the number of players leaving the club, Canterbury City manager Dave Fairclough is delighted with his first acquisition of the campaign.

“Ben is an extremely talented player and we have seen enough from the first three training sessions to know that he will make an outstanding contribution for us over the coming seasons,” Fairclough told www.canterburycityfc.com.

The City manager also confirmed that a further two signings are expected over the weekend as the club bid to clinch their second successive promotion.
