Seager's unbeaten side face stern test - EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

Friday 20th October 2006

Whitstable Town’s promotion chasing player-boss Marc Seager has warned his side that Beckenham Town could become the first side to take Kent League points off them, writes Stephen McCartney.

The Oystermen lost top spot on Wednesday night after Thamesmead Town won comfortably at underperforming Tunbridge Wells.

Keith McMahon’s side won 3-0 at Culverden Stadium, against a side that have collected just two points this season, and they welcome seventh placed side Hythe Town to Bayliss Avenue, whilst Whitstable Town, who have a 100% record after seven games, travel to the division’s highest scorers.

Beckenham have scored a total of 31 goals from their first 12 league games, but have played the most games than any of their rivals.

But Seager said EXCLUSIVELY to www.kentishfootball.co.uk on the eve of the game that everyone wants to be the first side to beat the Belmont boys.

“It’s a big game, we’re unbeaten so every game is a big game for us at the moment as teams want to be the first one to beat us,” he said.

“They’ve got a good side and it will be a battle but hopefully we can come out on top.”

But he warned: “To be honest, any side, every opponent we play can be the side that ends our (100%) record. If we play below par, with a bad attitude, then it’s a chance to take points off us.”

Seager’s side have three games in hand over new leaders Thamesmead Town, who have a two point lead, but Seager admitted he would rather have the points in the bag.

“Thamesmead are top now, we’re chasing them now,” he said. “We have games in hand but I’d rather have the points. I would rather have the points as we have to win those games.

“We’ve had a great start to the season. Beckenham know we are a good side and the league table doesn’t lie.

“But nothing’s won after seven games. We are not getting carried away, the players want to win, it’s a tough game but if you want to win a league title these are the sides you have to go and get points.

“I believe a good successful side is a side that may not win the game but they don’t get beat either.”

But Seager feels tomorrow’s showdown at Eden Park Avenue will be an exciting game.

“I’ve watched them a couple of times,” he revealed. “They’re top scorers in the league, but they’ve conceded a few.

“I can watch Beckenham as many times as I want, they are a good side but I’m worried about my players. Hopefully we can get a performance that will get us three points.”

Seager is still without Josh Main (broken wrist) and Sam Prett is expected to be out of action for a couple of months with a groin strain.

But Seager is pleased with the strength in depth at the Belmont.

“One thing I have got is a fairly strong squad,” he said. “Not a lot of money but I’ve got a squad of 20 players and that’s very strong.

“I’m over the moon with the way the season has started. The players have done the business but nothing’s ever won in October.”

Seager’s players acquitted themselves very well against Ryman Premier League neighbours Margate in their FA Cup second qualifying round 2-1 defeat last month, but Seager is plotting to have more days like that next season.

“The cup run was good and we enjoyed the day with Margate,” he said. “That’s history now and we’re a club that’s applied for Ryman football.

“We’ve got the ground grading but it’s up to us to do the business. I believe we’ve got a side good enough to win the Kent League.

“I doesn’t matter what I say, it’s down to the players to do the business but we need to see what happens in the next six months.”
