Seager slams poor defending

Monday 13th October 2008

WHITSTABLE TOWN boss Marc Seager slammed his players defending as they returned to their bad old ways at Metropolitan Police on Saturday, writes Stephen McCartney.

Seager was on top of the world two weeks ago after his side stunned Ryman League Division One South unbeaten leaders Kingstonian to knock them out of the FA Carlsberg Trophy, winning the preliminary round tie 3-2 at Kingsmeadow.

But he crashed back down to earth with a thump, as he watched his side slump to a 4-1 defeat at Imber Court.

Seager complained about his side’s defending, as they suffered their eighth defeat in eleven league games this season, leaving them in the bottom three in the Ryman League Division One South table.

“We couldn’t defend,” Seager told www.whitstabletownfc.co.uk:  “Two goals we let in were avoidable and it was down to poor defending as simple as that.

“I never criticise my players if we have opened up and the opposition has really put us to the sword. Then it’s a case of well done to them.

“They were the better side and we look towards reversing the result next time we meet.

“But today, after the first two sloppy goals, then another just before the interval, we were out of it.

“But it was our own doing, they were all avoidable. It was just high balls bouncing around the box not being dealt with. We got what we deserved, nothing.

“They all know that the way we played on Saturday is not acceptable and all I ask is that they take the good form one week into the next and we are not doing that at the moment.”

Whyteleafe, a side that are four places above the Oystermen, visit Belmont Road on Tuesday night, with a record of three wins and a draw from eight league games.

The Surrey side were knocked out of the FA Cup at the third qualifying round stage on Saturday, going down 2-0 at Blue Square South Hampton & Richmond Borough, despite knocking out Kent side, Welling United in a replay in the previous round.
