Seager plots third cup scalp to reach final

Monday 30th March 2009

MARC SEAGER, the manager of underdogs Whitstable Town, is vying to add their third scalp, as they bid to reach the Kent Senior Cup Final for the very first time, writes Stephen McCartney.

The Oystermen have already dumped Tonbridge Angels and holders Ebbsfleet United out of the competition this season, and travel to Hayes Lane to tackle Blue Square South Bromley in tomorrow night’s semi-final.

Whitstable, playing their third team from a higher league, needed penalties to beat Ryman Premier League highflyers Tonbridge Angels in the first round, winning 5-4 from the spot, after the game finished 2-2 after extra time.

Holders Ebbsfleet United, a full-time side that play in the Blue Square Premier, were beaten 2-1 at the KRBS Belmont and confidence is high that Seager’s side will meet Blue Square South side Welling United in the final.

And Seager, speaking to www.whitstabletownfc.co.uk following his side’s excellent 1-1 draw at Kingstonian on Saturday, warns Mark Goldberg that his side deserves respect.

“It’s a big game, they’ll be at full strength,” said Seager. “It’s going to be a big game, another game we’re going to have to raise ourselves, we’ll go there as underdogs.

“They’ll show us total respect or if they don’t, they could get hurt to be honest.

“At the end of the day, we’ve earned the right to be in the semi-final. We’ve beaten Tonbridge, who were at full strength, and an Ebbsfleet side that had seven pros in their side and we’re the holders.

“We’re going out and giving it our best shot. Yes, Bromley are the favourites, they’re a couple of leagues above us and on paper they should win.

“But football results aren’t all about paper are they?

“It’s all on the night and if we have a little bit of luck, if the players show the heart and that like they did today (at Kingstonian), then there’s no reason why we can’t go up there and get a result.

“I know the players will give everything, like they did today.”

Bromley, meanwhile, go into the semi-final tie having defeated two Ryman Premier sides in Dartford (4-2) and Maidstone United (2-0), in earlier rounds of a competition that has now lost its magic.
