Seager looking for bonus points

Monday 16th February 2009

WHITSTABLE TOWN manager Marc Seager says he is looking forward to his side’s next two games - against two sides vying for promotion out of Ryman League Division One South, writes Stephen McCartney.

Seager, speaking to www.whitstabletownfc.co.uk, said he was looking to take some points from Ashford Town on Tuesday night then on Saturday when the Metropolitan Police visit the KRBS Belmont.

Both are very tough games but Seager knows his side are on a good run of form, which will stand them in good stead for the run-in to the end of the season.

The Oystemen are currently in fifteenth place in the table, seven points clear off the relegation zone, and are confident that their remaining 12 games will go well.

“If you look back to the teams we played at the start of the season, the likes of Cray, Met Police and Ashford, these are teams that are right near the top of the table, and we also dropped points early on against sides that we should be nicking points off,” said Seager.

“If you look at the turn around this last month or so we have been playing sides around us in the bottom half of the table, won four out of the last six and drawn at the weekend at Whyteleafe.

“We’ve taken points off sides in our own little mini league if you like; these are sides where the games turn into six-pointers, win one or two and you see daylight.

“Now we face a couple of games, which I look on as bonus points, games where we are not expected to get anything from and if we do, then it’s a bonus.

“We do have a few players carrying injuries still hampering my selection and a couple of suspensions but we still have enough quality at the club to get the results needed to make our Ryman status secure for another year.

“Simon (Halsey, my assistant) made a good point the other day where he said that we have players putting in the odd 70% performance, but the difference has been a whole team performance, when all the lads have been, as Simon says, sevens or eights, and that’s very pleasing.

“Can I just say that I am so very pleased for Fewelly (keeper Kevin Fewell). We have just kept two clean sheets on the bounce, which is some small reward for Kevin as he worked so hard at the beginning of the season when, if I am honest, he stopped a two or three goal defeat becoming a five or six goal hammering.”

Meanwhile, chairman Tony Rouse poured scorn on rumours circulated on a near-by club’s unofficial forum, saying that Whitstable were seeking to drop back down to the Kent League voluntarily.

“Too much Sangria if you ask me,” he said. “If you look at where the rumour came from, I believe a conversation between a Whitstable Town supporter and a Herne Bay supporter whilst they were at the recent Spain-versus-England friendly match.

“Anyone with a grain of common sense can see that the Whitstable Town management, the players and the supporters, indeed all at the club are committed to moving the club forward.

“Why, after all the hard work done over the last goodness knows how many years by others before us, and the work we have done the last few years and continue to do, why would we throw it all away.

“It’s plain daft to suggest it, the only reason I am commenting is to put this nonsense to rest now. As far as I am concerned neither myself or anyone involved with the club will have anything more to say on the matter.”
