Today’s Southern Counties East Football League First Division game between unbeaten leaders Rochester United and third-placed SE Dons was postponed.

Referee Rhys Jeffrey was appointed for this tenth-tier fixture yesterday – replacing Myles Hewson - and contacted Rochester United after his appointment and offered to do a pitch inspection.

“We requested an early one as they had travelling fans.  Another SCEFL Level Four League referee came at 10:40.  Both clubs were present and the referee called the game off,” said a Rochester United spokesman.

SE Dons posted a video of the pitch on their X account and claimed, “How on earth have they called this game off? All travelling support, please don’t travel. For some reason today’s game has been called off.”

Rochester United have followed League protocol and called for a pitch inspection - with rain still falling in the local area until just before two o’clock - and the qualified official deemed the pitch to be unplayable.

A club statement explained: “There are simple rules for match inspections.

“Premier and Division One, match referee or if agreed, another Level Four from the League or someone that has been agreed by the Referee department.

“We are as disappointed as anyone else, (we had a) full squad available. We have worked hard all week to try and repair the pitch from last week.

“Abuse is ridiculous. We did (an) inspection early to avoid people travelling too.”

Games at nearby Snodland Town (against Fisher) and Tunbridge Wells (Kennington) were called off in the Premier Division and there was no football in two other games in the First Division, at Chessington & Hook United (Greenways) and Tooting Bec (Halls Athletic).

The League will re-arrange the fixtures in due course.
