Roberts suffers injury blow - EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

Friday 27th October 2006
Chatham Town manager Phil Miles has revealed that he is without Jack Roberts for tomorrow’s local showdown with Sittingbourne, writes Stephen McCartney.

The left-winger, whose on loan from full-time Nationwide Conference outfit Gravesend & Northfleet, broke his toe during Fleet’s behind closed doors friendly with Grays Athletic at Stonebridge Road on Tuesday night.

“Jack Roberts broke his toe playing for Gravesend’s reserves in the week and we’ve lost him for 4-6 weeks,” Miles revealed EXCLUSIVELY to www.kentishfootball.co.uk on the eve of the Maidstone Road clash.

“I was just about to roll over his loan for another month but he rang me on Wednesday to tell me he had broken his toe.”

Miles admitted the odds signing the youngster remain slim as Fleet boss Liam Daish “rates him”, although an extended loan period is an option as Roberts’ gains experience playing in the Ryman League.

“We’re just going to keep his loan rolled over,” Miles said.  “I’m not sure Liam will let him go (to Chatham) full-time.

“Liam rates him and wants him to get games under his belt.  But he’s only played three games for me but we will see the best of him.  He’s lacking match fitness but he’s got good ability.”

The Medway side clawed themselves away from the drop zone into 14th place in the division one south table following their 5-1 win over Hastings United last weekend

“It was important to get the win,” recalled Miles.    “A for the confidence and B to keep away from the drop zone.”

Miles, whose got all other players available tomorrow, is desperate to put right their poor recent form against Steve Lovell’s side.

“Last year we didn’t fair very well against them and I’m hoping this year we can put that right,” he said.

“It’s going to be another tough game.  It’s a big one for us, a local derby and to be fair their all big games for us in this league.

“Our players know their players and are friends so it does add some spice to the game.

“We need to play with the same desire, passion and commitment.  We just need some consistency and if we can be more consistent we will start picking up points”.
