Remy hails "the best goal that I've scored"
Tottenham based striker Ellis Remy was delighted with his 40-yard wonder goal, which earned Folkestone Invicta a invaluable point against Hampton & Richmond Borough in their Ryman Premier League fixture on Saturday, writes Andy Bown & Tom Marchant.
Remy told www.folkestoneinvicta.co.uk that he is enjoying his second spell at the Buzzlines Stadium.
He said: “The goal was just one of those things where you just do it! The ball bounced up and I saw what I wanted to do before it even happened.
“I know that sounds strange but the whole of the game I was having a glimpse over my shoulder and the keeper was off his line and I was thinking the next time it falls to me I’m going to shoot and I did it and it came off.
“As you must have seen I was over the moon, ran over to Cugs and all the players followed me and it was definitely the best goal I’ve scored and also because of what it meant - it won the team a point.
“It was just a frustrating game for me Saturday because I didn’t get a lot of chances and the one’s that did fall to the team weren’t quite there.
“Hampton were a very good team and they had a lot of good players, some big guys at the back and all the players were just pleased to get the result against them.”
After being released due to financial constraints in November, Remy and team mate defender Samuel Kola Okikiolu, were re-signed by Neil Cugley in late December in the light of the news that the Club Board would be boosted by five new Directors.
“Obviously me and Kola didn’t want to leave in the first place and I was scoring goals just before I left and had some confidence, and now I’m just really happy to be back. I’m playing with a great bunch of lads and some top players.
“With Mark Saunders coaching us, all the lads really are learning a lot off him and training is fun and I just want to keep scoring goals and doing well for the team and hopefully we can reach safety as soon as possible.”
After leaving Invicta in November Remy and Kola went to East Thurrock United. When asked what helped him make the decision to return to the Seasiders Ellis replied, “You know what, I think it was the fans. I actually enjoyed playing in front of the fans down here and they don’t realise how appreciative we are.
“The feeling around the place is really good, you’re made to feel wanted and as a new player that’s something you want to have. Another key element was the management; Cugs is a great manager, I get on with him really well and he didn’t want to let us go last year, it was purely financial and I’ve come back on the same terms and I’m really enjoying my football at the moment which is the main thing because it gives me confidence.”
