Raw players looking to shine at Herne Bay

Jason Lillis, the manager of Herne Bay, has warned rival clubs that he’s side could be the surprise package throughout this season’s Kent League campaign.

The former Gillingham and Maidstone United star takes his side to Fleet Town for a pre-season friendly today, preparing his young side for their opening day clash at Sevenoaks Town in just fourteen days time.

"
I have thought long and hard about the way to play this term,” Lillis told the club website at www.hernebayfc.net.

“We have all agreed to let the players play with flare and freedom, but not without self discipline.

“The players we have signed, with maybe one or two more to come, will provide a mixture of experience, youth and raw talent. Some have not played at Kent League level before.

“This year has seen the hardest pre-season preparation I have undertaken since I took over as manager.

“I thought they trying to replace crucial players would be hard but just when I thought I would not find a replacement, four players turn up who are all capable of being first choice in that position.

“What a battle there is going to be for midfield positions. This is great as we have not had this luxury since I came to the club.

“I have sensed a good feeling around the club, and a lot of excitement, as every player within the squad, has a chance to make the first team."

Lillis, preparing for his third season in charge at Winch's Field, added: “If I am honest, maybe it is a lot to expect this team to get promoted in their first season together, but who knows?

“I said exactly the same in my first season here and we turned out to be the surprise package.

“We finished runners-up (to Ramsgate) and should have won it, and got to a cup final.”
