Quinn is our captain marvel, says Seager - EXCLUSIVE

Thursday 03rd January 2008
Whitstable Town manager Marc Seager has completed the signing of central defender Liam Quinn, 22, on a free transfer from rivals Dover Athletic last night, writes Stephen McCartney.

Seager has been able to entice Quinn away from SeaFrance Crabble Stadium after an impressive loan spell – because he can offer him regular first team football.

“We had Quinny for a month, he’s a great player with a bit of experience,” Seager said EXCLUSIVELY to www.kentishfootball.co.uk tonight.

“Andy Hessenthaler (the Dover Athletic player-manager) didn’t want him to leave but Liam wants to play football.

“Liam enjoyed his month with us and he knows we’re trying to take the club forward and he wants to be apart of that.

“He is a very good player and he’s a winner, never gives less than 100%, drives people on.

“He is really like captain material, even through he doesn’t wear the armband.

“I’m pleased that he’s wearing the red of Whitstable Town.”

Explaining the transfer, Seager said:  “He had to be released from his contract but Dover have been fantastic to the lad.

“Liam has been good for Dover so they have a mutual respect for each other.

“Everyone knows the financial situation at Whitstable.  We haven’t got a big budget but it’s a massive coup to sign Liam.

“He wants to play football, the money isn’t an issue.  He’s one of those lads who loves the game.

“We run things very professionally, with a great set-up, great training facilities and when players come here on loan they can see what we’re trying to achieve.”

One player who arrived on loan at the Belmont outfit in two spells is striker John Akinde, 18.

Akinde progressed through the PASE scheme at Blue Square Premier outfit Ebbsfleet United but spent two loan spells with Whitstable Town to gain valuable experience.

But recent impressive displays with the Fleet’s first team has earned the youngster a contract at Stonebridge Road until the end of next season, pleasing Seager.

“I’m absolutely over the moon for the big man,” he said.  “We had him last year as a seventeen-year-old.  He’s a smashing lad, gives everything and I’m pleased that he’s progressed.

“He’s come to us and scored eight goals in 10 games when we had him on loan for seven weeks this season and to see him get a chance and that he’s taken it, I’m pleased.

“With our relationship with Ebbsfleet, they have the confidence to get their (young) players on loan to us.  Ebbsfleet know that their players will get looked after.”

Looking ahead to Walton Casuals visit to Belmont Road on Saturday, Seager challenges his side to emulate their excellent performance that they showed at Dover Athletic last weekend.

Whitstable earned a point in a determined 1-1 draw at Sea France Crabble Stadium – the second time that Andy Hessenthaler’s men have failed to beat them this season.

But Michael Adcock is a doubt against the Surrey side with a calf injury, sustained in the dying minutes against the Whites.

Micky Lane (hamstring) will be playing for the reserves, whilst Rob Thomas continues building up his fitness.

But Seager admits his players have set their own standards following their efforts last weekend and demands that they emulate that against the likes of Walton Casuals.

“The players have set their stalls out,” admitted Seager.  “They’ve answered the criticism from Boxing Day and they responded in the right way, put in a great performance but it’s disappointing why couldn’t we put in the performance like we did at Dover and not before?

“What it has done, the result, has given the players a massive boost, a confidence boost and gives us a platform to build from.

“People can raise themselves for Dover but on the other hand when you play teams as big as Dover it’s easy to get overawed.  They raised their games and fully deserved to get something.

“This Saturday is a bigger game for us than the Dover game was.  Dover is a big Kent derby and we got a good point at Crabble and a point at the home of the Ryman League (Division One South) champions.

“We’re in our own battle in our own little league and looking to get points from.

“We beat Walton Casuals 2-1 at their place and they’ve been finding it tough like us.

“The league table doesn’t lie, we’re in our own little league and very important to pick up points.

“It’s going to be a very tough game but the lads have set their stalls out and I don’t expect us to drop below the performance they put in at Dover – we’re looking for consistency and performances week in week out.

“I’ve said from day one, and we’ve proved it already, we can hold our own against any of the top sides but it’s about consistency.

“The hardest thing in football is to get out of a losing rut but it bodes well to get a good start to 2008.”
