We need to start defending better as a team, admits Phoenix Sports manager Steve O'Boyle

PHOENIX SPORTS manager Steve O’Boyle admits he has no defence going into tomorrow’s FA Trophy debut.

The newly-promoted side are struggling defensively and have shipped 19 goals in their last five games and travel to Whyteleafe tomorrow in the Preliminary Round.

But striker Ricky Freeman has scored nine goals in the last four games so goalscoring is not proving a problem.

Phoenix Sports are in fourteenth-place in the Ryman League Division One North table, having won four, drawn two and lost five of their league games on their debut season.

Whyteleafe, meanwhile, are sitting in thirteenth-place in the Ryman League Division One South table, collecting five wins, one draw and five defeats in the league this season.

“Another historic day for us tomorrow, our first ever FA Trophy game,” said O’Boyle, whose club will scoop £2,500 in prize money should they get past John Fowler’s side, which will earn a lucrative home Kent derby against Tonbridge Angels on 31 October.

“Looking forward to the game, although it will be tough considering Whyteleafe reached the play-offs last season.

“We need to start defending better as a team and I hope that it starts tomorrow.

“It would be nice to earn the club some more prize money and progress to the next round.

“We will have to play better than we have done in recent games for this to happen though.”
