Pennock: We're expecting a tough night!

Wednesday 16th August 2006

After Welling United’s opening win against Weston-super-Mare on Saturday, Wings boss Adrian Pennock takes his side to Lewes tonight.

Leon Solomon and Ellis Green were missing from squad selections on Saturday and it’s likely the two players will miss the trip to Lewes.

Ellis Green was involved in a car accident on Saturday when making his way to the ground. The young midfielder previously with Beckenham Town suffered whiplash and only minor injuries.

Welling's top goal scorer last season Danny Kedwell has finished his three game suspension and will be available for selection.

Leon Solomon who made over 40 appearances for the Wings last season was a key part of the Welling United squad. However, the Wings boss stressed the young defender will not be rushed back.

He told www.wellingunited.co.uk : “Leon twisted his knee during pre-season, there was a possibility he was going to play against Weston-super-Mare on Saturday. However, he broke down in training last Monday.

”We have to be sensible; he did some training before the game and said there wasn’t any Pain. Nevertheless, he is a young lad and we can’t really rush him back.”

Big spenders Lewes are favourites to win the league and even at this early stage will be a tough trip for Welling. But Pennock is still very confident his side can get a result.

He added: “I’m always confident in getting a result anywhere, but it is always a difficult place to go.

“We found that out last year when we went 1-0 up and obviously Lee Gledhill got sent off and we had our backs against the wall for the rest of the game.

”They have got some very good players and they have spent a lot of money. We have several young lads which are fearless, and that helps sometimes. We will go there full of confidence and I hope we can give them a very good game”.
