Pennock rues missed chances
Welling United manager Adrian Pennock admitted he was “disappointed” after his side squandered plenty of first half chances during their enthralling 1-1 draw at highflying Hornchurch yesterday, writes Stephen McCartney.
But he is anticipating another tough game against the Ryman League Division One North side at Park View Road in the FA Cup third qualifying round replay on Wednesday night.
His side created many early chances, the best coming from Ellis Green’s 18-yard shot, which bounced off the crossbar after ten minutes, before they deservedly took the lead ten minutes later.
Jamie Day’s, taking the fifth of his 12 corners, delivered the ball to the near post, but the ball glanced off Urchins’ right-back Ronnie Fletcher and just over the goal-line despite the Essex side attempts to hack the ball clear.
But Mark Janney’s eleventh goal of the season, just four minutes into the second half, earned both sides a lucrative replay.
“Disappointed that we didn’t win,” Pennock told www.kentishfootball.co.uk after the enthralling game in front of 1,002, which was the Essex's side largest crowd of the season.
“We had very good chances but when it’s only one-nil and you’re away from home you just need that killer goal to be fair and we just couldn’t get it.
“They worked hard, caused more problems second half as they did in the first but at the end of the day we have to go and do a job now at home on Wednesday evening.”
But Pennock was pleased with the explosive start from his side, where he feels, they should have scored more than one goal.
“We came out of the blocks very quickly and that’s when we really should have capitalised on it,” he said.
“We had a lot of good chances but the ties not over, we’re at home now and we really have to fancy our chances going through but it will be a very difficult game.
“I was pleased with the performance. There was some good individual play out there but the only thing really was we didn’t score more goals. We scored one goal and that was it.
“But coming away, it’s a difficult place. Their players to be fair are Conference South standard players because a lot of their players came from Thurrock, but getting a draw you’ve got to be pleased.
“We got to look forward to Wednesday, we’re under no illusions. It’s going to be a difficult game but we’ve got to go there full of confidence and fingers crossed we’ll get the win.”
