Our standards must not drop, says Welling United boss Jamie Day

Friday 14th December 2012
WELLING UNITED player-manager Jamie Day says his side are under no presusre when they travel to three-times FA Trophy winners Woking tomorrow.

The Wings travel to Surrey sitting in second-place in the Blue Square Bet (Conference) South table and face a Woking side that are slap bang in midtable in the league above.

Woking sealed the Blue Square Bet (Conference) South title last season and Day is looking forward to the last 32 clash at Kingfield Stadium.

“Hopefully if it’s on it will be a game that we’re looking forward to,” said Day, on the eve of the Second Round clash.

“We’ve got nothing to lose so we’ll go there full of confidence. Hopefully we can play like we have done over the last month or so and hopefully get the right result.

“There’s no pressure on us.  That’s the one good thing playing a team from a division above, we can go there and use it as a free game really. Obviously we want to win it as well.

“They’re expected to beat us.  They won the league last year, I’d like to think the pressure is on them.”

When asked how his side will repicate thei win over Newport County 2-0 at home in the last round, Day replied: “I think we need to just go and play as we have done – full of confidence; lots of effort and work-rate and obviously a bit of quality as well.

“It’s not going to be easy because they’re a very good side, so we need to be tight at the back as well.  Hopefully we can score some goals on the day and win the game.”

Former Welling United skipper, Jack Parkinson, says he is hoping to be fit after being left on the sidelines for three weeks due to a hamstring injury.

Loick Pires also helped the Wings to the Blue Square Bet (Conference) South play-off final last term, after helping the Kent club to third place in the table after 42 games.

Day said: “It will be nice to see them.  Both done really well for us when they were at the club and moved on to a higher league so we’re pleased for them.

“They know a bit about us and we know how they play as well. If they’re in the starting eleven it will be nice to play against them and see how they are and we’re looking forward to it."

The Wings go into tomorrow’s game with six wins on the bounce and Day is pleased with his side’s run of form going into the big game.

Day said: “The boys’ have been excellent all through November and the start of December so credit to them.

“We have to keep that going and not let our standards drop.

“We know we’re going to get beaten at some stage, but I think once we do we have to bounce back and get on a run again. Until that happens we’ll be looking to keep the run going.”

When asked about the injury front, Day kept his cards close to his chest.

“I’m not too sure at the minute,” he said.  “We might have a full squad but that could change between now and Saturday. We’ve got a couple carrying knocks who are going to see the physio later on and we’ll know from there.”
