LYDD TOWN manager Dave Smith says he wants his side to be the shining lights going into the New Year. The Lydders sit proudly at the summit of the Pain & Glory Sports Kent Invicta League table, having collected 12 wins, one draw and two defeats this season.
Smith’s side are three points clear of second-placed Sheppey United, and four clear of defending champions Hollands & Blair, who have a game in hand.
Lydd Town welcome Southern Counties East Football League side Corinthian to The Lindsey Field in the Second Round of the Kent Senior Trophy on Saturday.
Smith said: “Saturday’s game is without doubt a big game for us taking on a side from a higher division, which is always a challenge and particularly as Corinthian are sixth in the league and having a good season.
“But we go into the game in good form after winning our last seven matches, so it will certainly be an interesting spectacle for hopefully a good crowd to enjoy.”
Lydd Town are on the brink of installing floodlights at their ground, following in the footsteps of Gillingham-based Hollands & Blair.
“It is a shame that we could not get our lights up in time but due to unforeseen delays with the main delivery we still have a week or two works to complete this part of our ground improvement,” revealed Smith.
Reflecting on their campaign to date, the Lydd Town boss said: “Our season so far has been good. We did lose a couple of quality players to Ryman League sides pre-season but the younger lads we have brought in are settling in well and are regularly showing improvement.
“We certainly don’t have the same numbers in depth as we had last season but this season’s squad are really building together a terrific desire to succeed which has certainly seen us through some tough fixtures this season.
“We are at the half way point in the league season and we are top but there are some good sides chasing us so our focus now is to get to the New Year in the same position and hopefully still have a cup in our sights after this week’s game.”
