Millwall unveil Ian Holloway as their new boss

MILLWALL have today appointed Ian Holloway as their new manager.

The Lions unveiled the former Blackpool and Crystal Palace manager as their new chief after Steve Lomas was sacked on Boxing Day.

Millwall chairman John Berylson said that Holloway has agreed a two-and-a-half-year contract at The New Den.

“We are delighted to announce the appointment of Ian Holloway as our new manager,” Mr Berylson said in a statement issued on www.millwallfc.co.uk.

"The fact that we have been able to attract someone of Ian's calibre and track record is testament to the fact that he shares our view of the potential we have to progress as a club and to move forward.

"In our determination to bring Ian in on a two-and-a-half-year contract, we have demonstrated both the level of our ambition and commitment towards re-establishing ourselves as a competitive Championship club, and in due course challenging towards the top end of this division.

"We are under no illusions that our first priority under Ian's leadership is to ensure we maintain our Championship status. The new manager inherits an experienced and talented squad that has not been playing to its potential so far this season. He will receive the backing of the board to strengthen as he deems necessary.”

The Lions are presently sitting in 21^st place (bottom four) in the Championship with 22 points from 24 points, one point clear of the relegation zone.

The Lions chairman, however, admitted the club made a mistake appointing Lomas, whose appointment didn’t go down well with fans due to him previously playing for bitter rivals West Ham United.

Mr Berylson admitted: "Since the departure of Kenny Jackett in May we have all learned some difficult lessons. Under Kenny we enjoyed a period of stability in which all elements within the club, from the board, management, staff, players and fans were pulling together in the same direction.

"Our aim, going forward, is to rediscover that formula that stood us in such good stead.

"I am disappointed with the way things have developed over the past six months. Where mistakes have been made, they have been honest ones and decisions taken were with the best interests of the club at heart. I have been in constant contact with Pete Garston, our Fan Director, to discuss supporters' issues.

"I understand the passion and desire of our fans to see Millwall become successful once again, and I know that the biggest driver for this to happen is for everyone to get behind the team, the management and everyone who works tirelessly for this club.

"I would like to personally thank our CEO Andy Ambler for handling the current situation and for ultimately persuading Ian to come and discuss the managerial vacancy with myself and the board.

"As with most families, there have been some harsh words exchanged of late and there is no doubt that it has been painful for those on the receiving end.

"Now is the time for disunity to stop and for us all to unite behind Ian Holloway, his staff and the players as they seek to restore Millwall Football Club both on and off the field."
