Margate step on the gas in bid to avoid the drop

Sunday 22nd February 2009

MARGATE boss Terry Yorath says he is pleased his side have hit form at the right time - and that his side have scored three goals in a league game for only the second time this season.

The Blues have now picked up 10 points from their last five games, following yesterday's 3-1 home win over Boreham Wood.

With the BBC Wales’ cameras present at Hartsdown Park to film Welsh legends Yorath and Neville Southall for a TV programme to be shown in a few weeks in the principality, there was a buzz of expectation that the Blues would claim the win to climb out of the Ryman Premier League relegation zone.

And goals from Dan Young, a Ryan Peters penalty and Joe Healy, bagged the points - the second time that Margate had scored three goals in one league game - the one previous time was when Harlow Town was beaten 3-0 at Hartsdown Park just before Christmas.

Yorath, speaking in an audio interview with www.margate-fc.com, admitted the first half showing from his side was poor, but they stepped up the gas following his wise words during the interval.

“It’s another game today where it was a game of two halves,” he said.

“We were poor today in the first half defensively, we were all over the place. Luckily, Pat (Mullin) didn’t have a lot to do (although) they’ve struck the post from one shot, but he didn’t have a lot of saves to make.

“We were fortunate enough to go in at half-time nil-nil. We were fortunate that they never exploited us with the amount of possession they had.”

Reflecting on the second half, Yorath added, “We stepped it up, the tempo was faster than the first half. It should be because we’re a young side and the energy levels were better and we got our reward for that.”

Yorath, meanwhile, was pleased that his side are clicking into gear, although he forgot about the Harlow Town victory just before the festive period.

“Boreham Wood are a physical side, but also they’re a good footballing side,” he said. “The three boys in midfield did very well for them.

“They’re mobile up front, but our boys got stuck in and didn’t waver and we got three goals, something I don’t think we’ve done this season, I can’t remember, but we’ve got three goals, which is great.”
